Deans special efforts

Most DJ's punch buttons for a few hours and go home.

Some DJ's do extra ordinary things all the time.

Lisa Caraco - Tim Lewis   Saving the brides very special lost song
Lisa had a special tape of a song done by a musician.   She asked me to use it for her wedding ceremony so we met a second time just to transfer the mini disc to me.  I used it for her ceremony and all went fine.  Months after her wedding she called me and asked me if I still had this song.   She lost her copy and asked me to find my copy, burn it to a CD and mail it to her.   I did this for her at no charge!
Carrie Voyce - Kingston
Poor Carrie.   She hired the same DJ company her girlfriend did.   At her girlfriends wedding the DJ never showed up.   She cancelled them and hire me and I promised her I would show up on her wedding day.  I was in the Edmonds ferry line at 1215PM and called Carrie on my cell phone to assure her I was on my way!  I was doing her ceremony at 4 PM at her Aunt's home near Kingston.  I arrived at her Aunts home around 2 PM, a whopping 2 hours before Carrie's wedding ceremony start time.   Carrie was very happy to see me so early.

They left almost an hour early and the dancing was over.  But one woman picked up the karaoke microphone and started singing.  Then others wanted to sing.  I could have left an hour early but didn't.   They were having such a good time that at my 4 hour mark I didn't shut down.   I let them sing for another 45 minutes for free.

Almost 20 years ago at the Alderwood Mall   Saving another DJ company
The DJ company doing the fashion show sent a trainee DJ to do it.  He was hired the week before and did not know how to get the sound system going.   I did and set it for him.  Had I not done this there would have been no music for the fashion show.    The people who ran the fashion show did not know the company they hired sent a person who had never set up a professional sound system.  They didn't know it was me who bailed them out..
Tom the DJ         Saving a DJ with no microphone
Years ago this DJ called me on a Friday night asking if I had spare microphones.  I said yes but why?   He was doing a birthday party in Juanita and forgot his microphone.   He asked me to bail him out and bring one of my spare microphones.  I had to drive 12 miles to get to the hall he was at.   When I got there I gave him my microphone and it worked.   He never thanked me for this.
Sorority Sisters party          Saving a group with no DJ
Years ago they called me a week before their party and asked me if I was available to DJ for them.  I said yes but why call me so late?   They said they hired a another DJ company.   When they called to confirm their DJ the company said they had no record of them booking an event and were no longer available.   The reason they hired them was because one women in the sorority had a son who worked for this DJ company.   They hired me with less than a week's notice and I did a great job.
Bride Kim in Maltby        Saving the bride for a special song
She wanted the Wedding Song and wanted the original song..  She purchased wedding cd after wedding cd and none had the original.  Kim purchased 4 wedding CD's.   She finally asked me if I had it and I said yes.   She wanted it for her wedding ceremony so I burned a copy of this song and gave it her to keep.  I was not involved with the ceremony so it was a gift.  She was very grateful I had this song.
Shaw Island Wedding reception in a tent   For Vrenni
This was in september and they rented a huge tent to put in their field for the reception.  It was a cold in the tent.   They had two AC powered heaters but at one the power strip went bad.  Luckily I carry spare power strips so loaned them mine for all night.   Without my help we were down to one heater!   They also did not have enough ac cords to power the twinkle lights over the dance floor.  I found my special thin ac cords and used 30 feet of them to get power to the dance floor lights.
Some Hotel Downtown Seattle - Wedding reception      Saving the photographer
This was 15 years ago and it was a big one.  400 people.   I waited and waited for the bridal party to arrive because I wanted to play a song as they came down the stairs.  When they did arrive I noticed there was no photographer there.   They were coming down many red carpeted stairs and the pictures would be awesome.

I stopped the whole bridal party at the top of the stairs and asked them to give me time to find the photographer.  I found him at the other end of the huge hall and told him to quickly go to the other end and shoot the wedding party as they came down the red carpeted stairs.  Had I not been there these pictures would never been shot.

Edmonds Cabana Christmas Party
We had a serious problem with the lights.   There were 3 bright lights on the dance floor that they did not want.  We could not find a light switch to turn them off.  I knew from experience the way to turn them off might be at the circuit breaker panel.  I found it and started flipping breakers off till I found the one for the 3 lights and turned them off.   They were really happy to see me do this.

We also had a serious problem with the entrance doors upstairs and downstairs.  Both were on autolock so once a person went outside they were locked out.   Upstairs this was a serious problem because everyone was downstairs.  I knew how to fix it by taping both upstairs and downstairs door locks so neither could lock.  After I did this people could go out and get back in easily.

Antioch University Party at the UW Arboretum.   Dean becomes an assistant caterer
The caterer they hired did not bring enough food for the people there and it was embarrassing.   The people in charge asked me to go buy more food so I happily went to QFC at the University Village and bought more food to eat.  They paid me for the food but not for the time and effort I did on their behalf.

Once again I was set up early so had time to do this for them.  I sure get into a lot of trouble showing up early for my gigs!

The wedding reception that didn't happen.
It was in september 20 years ago and I got a call Monday telling me the wedding was off.  The wedding was that weekend!  I had their payment in full and felt so sorry for the family I returned their un-cashed check in full.   I returned their full payment to me because I felt so sorry for this bride or groom.   I won't ever do this again but will take some payment for such a late cancellation.
Assumption Parish church in north Seattle.     Saving the caterers
The caterers needed another small table but all the ones left were 8 foot long.  I told them I had a 4 foot table I was not using and offered to loan it to them.   They said "would you be that nice?".   I said yes and loaned them my table all night.  It was the perfect size for the room and they quickly covered it with a tablecloth and food.
Fairmont Olympic Hotel  -  Downtown Seattle     Saving the music

I didn't know the brides sister made up special audio cd's for her sister.   She made a very special 20 minute audio montage of many special songs.   When she gave it to me an hour before the first dance I luckily tried to play it in my dual cd player.  It would not play.  I put it in my laptop and it showed many songs which meant she gave me the wrong cd to play for the first song.

She went through her other cd's and found the right one and gave it to me.   But it would not play.  I asked her how she recorded it and she said in MP4 format.   I told her only Apple stereo's could play this format.   She didn't know that.  Luckily I had my laptop with Itunes on it so I copied the major songs to my laptop and used it to play the first song and another cd she had burned for her sister.

Had they hired a DJ who did not have a laptop they would have lost all their songs.  Even then a DJ must have an Apple laptop or a PC laptop with Itunes to play her songs.   Music wise I saved their day.

Monte Cristo Ballroom  -     Dean becomes the shrimp cook
One my of silliest wedding stories.   They had a huge glass bowl of shrimp at the buffet table but the shrimp was all frozen solid. How can you eat totally frozen shrimp?   I took the bowl into the kitchen and turned on the hot water on the shrimp.

It took a while but I finally got the shrimp warm and tasty and put it back on the table.  I went back to my DJ table and announced over the microphone I had given the frozen shrimp a "hot bath" and invited everyone to try and get shrimp again.   This time it would be edible.   Gosh, do I have to "cook" for wedding receptions too?

Floral Hill Park in Everett          Saving the ceremony
I was doing the music for the ceremony outside and noticed something bad.   They had a water fountain that was great to see but very noisy.   I strongly suggested they turn it off during the ceremony so we could hear their minister speak.  They agreed and I turned the water fountain off .  After the ceremony was over I turned it on.
Beaver Lake Lodge   Issaquah Plateau   2001
This couple was having their wedding ceremony in the woods almost 300 feet away from the lodge.   They asked me if I could set up a wireless microphone for their minister?   Many DJ companies they asked to do this turned them down because of the distance.  I didn't know better and said yes I could do it for them.  I did.

They hired 4 musicians for their ceremony and these people showed up at the last minute.   They needed chairs badly but had no time to get them.  I walked hundreds of feet back to the lodge and got 2 chairs and took them to where they set up in the woods.  I did it again for 2 more chairs for the other 2 musicians.   This was not my job!   I had come so early I set up with time to spare.

Tibbets Creek Manor Issaquah -    For the bride's dad
The bride's name was Laura and she told me when she was a little girl her daddy used to sing her a song named "Tell Laura I Love Her".   She asked me if I knew the song and I told her I did.  She asked me to bring this song to her wedding reception in case she wanted me to play it.  I did not use but after her reception I found her father and gave him the CD with this one song on it.  He was very grateful for my kind act.
Lake Union Condo birthday party       Becoming a food preparer
This was for Janines birthday party at her Lake Union condo.  She was short on help in the kitchen.  I was early again so had time to spare.  I volunteers to help slice the mean, cheese and put them on plates.  Think I did this for half an hour.  I know Janine appreciated my help cause when I opened my check the next day I had a mini heart attack!  I got paid very well.
Hollywood School House     Karaoke gift
Ran across a family that wanted me because I had two wireless microphone and karaoke.  I was gone but knew they wanted karaoke desperately.  They also could not afford it.  I passed this gig to another DJ who didn't have karaoke.   Because they were on the verge of crying not having karaoke I offered to come by and set up a karaoke system for them for free.   This was after I did my wedding reception the same day 3 hours earlier.
Lake Wilderness Golf Course            Extra speaker wanted outside
They had a large tent set outside and wanted music there.   They asked me if I could do it and I said yes.  I had to arrive extra early to set up a small speaker to get music to their tent and they were happy.
Marriot Hotel   Seattle waterfront        Saving the weak PA system.
This was a rugby association party and they had many important speeches to do.   The problem was the hotels public address system was very poor.   People in most of the room could not hear what the speakers were saying.   A guest came to me and asked me if I could fix the problem?   They could hear nothing in most of the room.  I had anticipated this and had my wonderful wireless microphone and speaker system ready.

I went to the podium and motioned the current speaker to take my microphone and use it.   Immediately the sound level was far louder and the fidelity was much better.  Everyone in the room could hear the people making speeches now.  I received several compliments from the guests for saving this part of their party.

Shumway Mansion       Saving the bride from getting her wedding dress wet
During the wedding ceremony downstairs someone knocked over a big drink and it ran into the aisle.   The aisle the bride and groom were walking back on when the ceremony was done.  I quickly went to the restrooms and got a ton of paper towels and got all the wet drink off the floor.  When the newlyweds came back down the aisle it was totally dry.
Courtyard at Country Village     Making an effort to get a microphone to a different room
This couple had me set up by the elevator.   They ate in the other room but my microphone system and sound system could not reach there.   To get them a PA system with wireless microphone I had to drag one speaker to the other room.  Then unhook my wireless microphone system and move it to the other room and set it up again with my moved speaker.

When I was done I gave them my wireless microphone to make speeches and toasts during and after their dinner.   This was going beyond what I was paid to do.

Mountaineers New Years Eve Dance        Setting up special room lights & candles
Back in August I did a party there and their colored glass bowls all had candles in them that were almost gone.   I suggested to the dance chairman we drop small candles in each bowl for the next party.  I brought 15 small candles and we used half of them in the bowls and 2 more for a table.

She asked me if I had colored lights to put in the half moon wall lights which were all white.  I did have 8 such lights (most DJ's don't have these) and spent 20 minutes taking out white lights and putting my colored ones.   She also asked me to bring a small desk lamp for their table at the door where people were coming in.   I had a light to spare and loaned them my small table lamp all night.

Lake Sammamish Plateau July 4 party            Saved a DJ
Got a call 2 years ago from a DJ friend who was having vehicle problems.   He asked me to provide a sound system and go with him to his event.  Since his vehicle was down he asked me to use my minivan to deliver my sound sytstem.   I did as he asked and the party went fine.
Hollywood Schoolhouse                             Saved a DJ
A DJ I know booked a wedding ceremony but they wanted two wireless microphones.   He had only one and asked to borrow one of mine.   (I own 4 hand held wireless microphones.)    So we met and I loaned him one of my spare wirleess microphones.
Carillion Point in Kirkland             Teenager and her Ipod
This was a birthday party where they asked me to set up 1 hour early.   I went so early I was set up 90 minutes early.  People came and I was going to leave and come back later when the teenager daughter of the birthday mom asked me if she could play her Ipod through my sound system.   If I did it would be free since I would not charge them for this favor. I added her Ipod to my DJ system and we played music for an hour for free.
Lake Wilderness Lodge                   Mistaken for a wedding coordinator
This was a large wedding reception and we needed to put out the drinks.  They had 14 tables to put 2 bottles on.   I waited to see who would do it and no one did.   So I went to the bar and started taking off the wires, foil, and cork on all their champagne bottles by myself and took a bottle to every table.   Then I took another bottle of apple cider to every table too.   When I was done I checked with their bartender about getting ready to do the toasts and he thought I was their wedding coordinator!
Chateau in the Woods  -  North Lake Sammamish      Saving another vendor
I had nothing to do with the ceremony but I had to be set up before it started.   When it began the singer's microphone was dead.  I took a chance and walked around the people seated and grabbed their microphone and put mine on and tested it.  No, it was dead.  I went to my van and got my spare microphone cable and installed it and tested it.   It worked!   I raised the microphone up to the singer so she could use it.   The road traffic at this hall was high so they needed the microphones badly.   After the ceremony the guy who was responsible for the microphone system thanked me for saving his bacon.

My questions was why did he not do this?   It was his PA system!

Sanya and Kelly at Orting          Rescuing the wedding ceremony
I arrived too early, 2 hours ahead of my start time.  I planned to arrive an hour early but traffic was super light so I got there way ahead of time.  The groom Kelly came up to me and asked me if I had a wireless microphone for the minister.  They forgot to think about it.   I said no but I had my wonderful hand held wireless microphone that we could use.   I had nothing to do with the ceremony up to now.

On the spur of the moment I carried my powered speaker and wireless microphone over 200 feet to where their ceremony was and set up my wireless system.  It worked great during their ceremony and everyone heard their minister speak.

Grand Hyatt Hotel 2007             Helping musicians again
I was asked to set up 3 hours early and set up an audio line for their projector in the middle of the room.   The band was supposed to start at 6 PM but at 5 PM none of them were there.  I left but didn't go too far away.  They called me on my cell phone asking me to come back and start background music as no one from the band had arrived.

By the time I got there one band member did arrive but she had no AC power.   The band member who had the cords was still on his way.   She needed to practice fast so I went and got my spare AC cords and set up power for her.  I had to lay it down across an entrance so got tape from the hotel and taped it down to the floor.   The the second band member came and he needed AC too.  I set up another line for him and made him happy.   He didn't have power cords so we used mine again.

The band member who had the power cords finally showed up but my cords were set so we used them till the band was done.   I didn't have to do any of this.   I wasn't paid extra to bail out the band.

Silver Dollar Casino in Renton          Saving the Men's restroom
We didn't know the power to the men's restroom lights were down.   We were told all males had to use the casino restrooms on the other side and any male under 21 years of age had to be escorted through the casino.   I had spare lights and asked the casino management if I could try to put my lights in the men's restroom.

They said OK and I did it!   I put two of my spare small lights in the men's restroom and we were able to use them all night long.   The funny part is one time I went to use it and saw a stall door close behind a bridesmaid dress.   One of the bridesmaids had to go so badly she used the men's restroom!   She didn't know I was the one who made this restroom available.
